3 Ways to Get More Comfortable Being Visible in Your Coaching Business

Putting yourself out there on social media, podcasts, YouTube, or wherever you choose to market your health coaching business can often be intimidating, particularly when you’re just starting out.

Much of our nerves  about being visible comes from our Imposter Syndrome; our worry that we don’t know enough or thoughts like, “Who am I to be talking about holistic health or starting my own business?” We worry about failing and what others’ will think.

While it’s perfectly normal to have fears and self-doubt, the truth is we have to be visible at least to some degree in order to help others and run a successful health coaching business.

While I still don’t love being on video, I realize it’s such an amazing way to genuinely connect with my audience and provide value.

I’ve also learned some tips along the way that have made being visible more comfortable that I think will help you too:

Work on your mindset

I know, I know, if you had a dollar every time a coach told you to work on mindset, you’d be off on a beach somewhere with an umbrella drink in hand.

But it’s truly imperative you work on your mindset and release your limiting beliefs. Keep in mind this will likely be an ongoing journey as more fears often rear their ugly heads when we reach new levels in our business or try something new.

For your fear of visibility, take some time and explore where this fear comes from. What is your specific worry(ies)?

For many of us, it comes from wanting to be liked and accepted by others, so our fear stems from what ifs, such as “What if they don’t like what I’m saying?” “What if I sound or look stupid?” or “What if they don’t like me?”

Once you’ve identified your specific worries, then work to challenge those thoughts. One way to do this is by asking what would I tell my client or my best friend if they had the same worries?

It can also help to challenge yourself to think of 1 time you were visible and it went well (or at least wasn’t as terrible as you’re likely imagining in your head).

Also, keep in mind that your clients and prospective clients want to connect with YOU and your story, and people are often attracted to brands where they get a sense of the real person and the journey behind them.

It’s important to let your audience see the real you; don’t be afraid to have a hair out of place or to flub a word (or several). Doing so helps your audience connect more deeply with you as a human.

Focus on being of service

When you shift from making it about you and your fears, concerns, and imperfections, you are coming from a “lack” standpoint. When you can focus instead on the message and value you’re providing and being of service, it puts the focus where it needs to be: on the client. That takes the focus off you and frees you up to do what you do best, which is to reach out and offer valuable solutions which will help people using your particular set of skills and strengths.

A tell-tale sign you’re making it about you is being unable to share your message. When you’re truly coming from a place of service and sharing your knowledge, that’s so often when your passion and excitement comes out. It’s hard to also be stuck in fear when you’re sharing something you strongly believe in and know first hand the positive impact it’s had in your life.

So WHEN (not if) you feel nerves about showing up on that Facebook Live, that networking event, or for your webinar; remember to refocus yourself to your client and being of service to them.

Do 1 thing each week that stretches you and gets you out of your comfort zone

Set some ‘visibility’ targets to keep you continually moving forward and to grow your confidence in sharing your message.

Here’s a few example visibility targets:

  • Attend a virtual or in person networking event

  • Do a weekly Facebook Live

  • Send an email to your mailing list

  • Post in a LinkedIn group

  • Write a blog post or guest for someone else’s blog

  • Get interviewed on a podcast or start your own

We’ll each have our own ideas for what activities will stretch us. As your first starting out, you may need to take smaller steps to build your confidence and can broaden as you grow.

Once you decide on your visibility targets, then schedule them in your calendar. Be sure to share your plans. It can make a huge difference if you ‘go public’ with your goals rather than keeping them to yourself.

Lastly, think of visibility as a skill you’re learning and with continued practice, it gets easier. Celebrate every visibility target you achieve, no matter how it goes. Make the measure of success be that you put yourself out there and got more comfortable being uncomfortable.
