3 Steps to Personal Growth

Growth starts with a decision to want to become a better version of yourself. It’s about putting yourself out there, trying new things, and learning from mistakes.

Growth is such a personal journey; we all have different versions and visions of what growth means to us-and that’s okay!

Sometimes growth can be relatively fun and easy, but other times I’ve found it to be slow and seemingly unending.

I’d love to share a few things I’ve learned along way of my own personal journey of growth, particularly if you’re feeling stuck right now:

  1. My life journey happened FOR me, not TO me

I’ve learned that my struggles, challenges, setbacks, procrastination, and mistakes all needed to happen.

Even the 3 past autoimmune disorders and a non-hodgkins lymphoma cancer diagnosis ALL happened FOR me to help me find my passion in holistic health and become a business coach and copywriter for health coaches and course creators (and important side note: I’m cancer free and have put my autoimmune disorders in remission-thank you holistic health and functional medicine!).

My challenges inspired-or perhaps forced-me to take care of myself and my health. I’m now able to run a successful coaching and copywriting business while spending the majority of my time in St. Martin in the Caribbean.

Of course, I didn’t know any of that at the time, just as you may not yet know why you’re on the journey you’re on but I think it’s about trusting the process, advocating for yourself, and looking for a meaning that helps fuel your growth.

Mistakes and setbacks are part of the journey and as long as you accept that and learn from them and cheer yourself along for getting out there and continuing to try and be of service, there is NEVER any failure.

2. Taking action is THE besT and perhaps ONLY WAY to get out of overwhelm

When I feel stuck, fearful, or overwhelmed, rather than getting trapped in my head about making just the right decision or not knowing where to start with my to-do list, I focus on taking a single baby step forward.

I recognize that fear’s going to be with me along this journey, so WHEN I feel it, I’m like, “Awesome, I’m playing a bigger game!” I have a little panic party, and then I DNA- which is “Decide my Next Action” and then implement that action.

I always feel so much better when I finally stop overthinking things and just take action. I find it’s more energy-draining to waffle back and forth than it is to just make a decision and move forward.

3. Assess your growth often and non-judgmentally

Measuring or somehow documenting your progress is KEY to lasting growth, change, and success. Whether that’s measuring a new habit you’re trying to start, measuring where your time goes, or whatever it is, actually knowing and being aware of what you’re doing is key.

Then when you run into obstacles or it’s not going as you planned, you can get “curious instead of furious” and explore what’s getting in your way and brainstorm how you can overcome the obstacles.

There’s a quote by Peter Drucker I love about this, “What gets measured gets managed,” and I wholeheartedly believe that. While it can be tempting to hide your head in the sand, you’re not actually doing yourself any favors in the long-term and are only keeping yourself stuck and playing small.

Instead, take stock of where you are now, what you want, and brainstorm baby steps to get you there.
